The Senate approved the constitutional reform that prohibits nepotism and consecutive reelection in public offices, sent by President Claudia Sheinbaum. The reform prevents any relative from replacing another in an elected position. Although it was initially established that the reform would come into effect in two years, the Morena caucus has decided to postpone it until 2030.
The modification, presented by the coordinators of Morena and PVEM in the Senate, proposes that the reform against nepotism be activated in 2030. This will allow Félix Salgado, Saúl Monreal, and environmentalist Ruth González to run for a gubernatorial position in the 2027 elections.
Ruth Miriam González Silva, senator for the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico in San Luis Potosí, is one of the candidates for the governorship of the state. At 38 years old, she has studied Communication Sciences and has held positions such as president of the System for the Comprehensive Development of the Family in the state and of the Municipal DIF of Soledad de Graciano Sánchez.
The approved reform prohibits relatives of officials from immediately holding a public office. The changes include modifications to six constitutional articles to prevent reelection at all levels of government. It also prevents individuals with family ties to those who have held the same position in the last three years from being candidates in elections.
The proposal will be sent to the Chamber of Deputies for analysis and voting. With the majority of Morena and its allies in the chamber, it is expected to be approved without difficulty. Once approved, the reform will be sent to Claudia Sheinbaum for publication in the Official Federal Gazette.
